A review of Sweet Tea a CD of Rolling Hills

Whatever one may say about the hills, the nickname of the one-man band Trey McGriff, can not accuse him of having shallow roots. On his myspace page that lists as influences of a hundred bands and musicians. There are age school (Otis Redding, The Beatles, Pink Floyd), a new school (The Killers, My Morning Jacket), tweeners (Nirvana, Dinosaur Jr.) electro types (The Cure, Depeche Mode) and eclecticians like him (Beastie Boys, Beck). This is probably partly a smartass - Comment on "What are your influences" question. There are also a list of persons who heard and is another way of saying that all the music you heard, or indeed, anything that has happened is registered by the brain, stirred by his time, reflected in his songs. He loves, hates, sounds, tastes, all in your head. Music and Lyrics, it a message comes in loud and clear on his CD Sweet Tea.

Yet this situation as a music mixer, which came with a disk that is like a meal with different foods, different flavors, and very tasty. Sweet Tea is not an album with a theme or tell a unique sound, but the strength of songs and individualism his voice and his musical palette runs the clear record of being a hodgepodge of things. It is not intellectually and intentionally when passing style to another as if looking for an identity, or gesticulating in the hope of catching the ear of the listener. The songs are well prepared and from his heart, making music clearly and honestly hills. A bit like a jazz artist who expresses his own voice on an album to have a ballad, the numbers swing, blues and a song with a Latin flavor.

"Crazier" opens the album with some catchy hard rock vintage '08 is the answer to "Rock and Roll Hootchie Coo" by Rick Derringer. The macho attitude that the song is replaced by the simple wonder of gettin 'down with a beautiful young girl who made him so mad that "no one know what to do / I'm Gettin 'Dizzy I'm Shakin' in my shoes. "The music works well with the song, alternating between guitar licks hard bar chord and trippy tremolo, vibrato-soaked guitar leads. His pop sensibility keeps everything tight, short and sweet as the tea. Hip hop drums open "is not new," then the song gives way to the kind of acoustic / electric rock guitar that never gets old. percussion and a choir boy at home can give the song a party feel despite the gravity of the portion of the song lyrics to life: "I live just daily and just Keepin 'my head above water / Not again all these feelings trapped inside me / Not again can not pay invoices, I think I'm drowning in its own way. . . I'm so lonely / a day / Let's Ride the waves in the sun. "

This cut deftly combines a pleasant melody, a severe tone, humor and hope, all in one. "Looking the Waves" is psychedelic rock with healing with a beer soaked College Kid trippin 'about playing the guitar chords and a simple time with friends. Catches common sense of the eternal being-here-now grooviness putting you right on the beach, as McGriff singing "Standing on the sea watching the waves roll, roll.

A draft McGriff music other is in the mode of experimental electronica and is called Somewhere Outhere. The song "Middle of Nowhere" hints in this regard. After a pulse of electronic drums and the humming bass with Spacey guitar riff ala New Order, this piece is a soundtrack to do so. . . whatever. It may seem strange and out of focus as the interlocking licks and drum up. Considering that these elements may seem abstract in another record, music by maintaining a database, funky, until you feel at home.

In his October 2007 article in The New Yorker, Sasha Frere-Jones the author, the best writer about music I add, wrote that, unlike the rock of the 50s through the 80s, twenty-first century indie rock is totally devoid of blues and soul, the root of the feeding ground of great music so much. That leaves indie rock and its derivatives, in his words, "full of lassitude and monotony." No problem with that here. Rolling Hills McGriff is from Georgia, more or less, so the blues, soul and the country is in their blood. It may help to mix the musical stew that's Up Cookin 'on Sweet Tea. This CD is a new evidence that, although commercial rock and pop are rotting and twisting in the wind, these are days of great music here, only we, the living.
